The Fort McMurray Wildfire Has Everyone Scrambling

With such little time to gather up loved ones and personal items before the mass evacuation of over 80,000 people, Fort McMurray residents are left wondering about their future. They're left wondering about their homes, their belongings, their jobs, their finances, and more.

Thankfully the good people of Alberta are strong, resilient people who will bounce back from this better than ever.

This event has also left governments, charities, and companies scrambling to serve Albertans in their time of need.

Aviva Canada issued a media release indicating that it is mobilizing its Catastrophe (CAT) team.

"Our hearts go out to the people of Fort McMurray. The safety of the residents, and that of the fire-fighting teams who are doing everything possible to get the situation under control, must be the primary focus,” said Greg Somerville, President and CEO, Aviva Canada.

Starting tomorrow, senior Aviva claims representatives will open a temporary command centre at the Canalta Lac la Biche Hotel, 9905 83 Avenue, Lac la Biche. Initial support will focus on issuing cheques for living expenses and other immediate needs. “Every effort will be made to respond to the needs of our customers. They can count on us to be there for them," said Somerville.

“Our thoughts are with those whose lives have been disrupted and whose homes have been destroyed. The priority right now is the safety of those affected and their loved ones,” said Bill Adams, Vice-President, Western & Pacific, IBC. “The insurance industry is here to help. Additional Insurance Information Regarding the Fort McMurray Wildfires

If you have property insurance, you may have the Mass Evacuation Endorsement on your policy, this endorsement provides coverage for the increased living expenses acquired due to a mass evacuation. (Limits apply). This endorsement can pay for things such as hotel/motel stays, some reasonable expenses such as meals and transportation costs. If you have this coverage on your policy and plan to use it, please remember to keep all of your original receipts, and that your policy deductible may apply. If you are unsure if this coverage is on your policy, please contact us to find out.

Emergency evacuation shelter available at Northlands Expo Centre located just off of Wayne Gretzky Drive at 7515 118 Ave Edmonton, AB T5B 4X5.

Due to the circumstances, you may experience longer hold times and responses from the claims department as they are anticipating a high volume of calls.

Please also note, due to the situation in Fort McMurray we are unable to provide new coverages/policies for both home and auto insurance at this time.

If you have any questions about the coverages provided on your property or auto insurance policies please do not hesitate to contact your broker, our hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, and Tuesday and Thursday 9 am to 7 pm, as well as Saturday from 10am-4pm.
