Mortgage Lenders React and Respond to Fort McMurray Wildfire

CMHC Statement: Support for those Affected by Forest Fires

"CMHC joins Canadians in expressing our concern for the people of Fort McMurray and the surrounding area that are dealing with devastating forest fires."

The link to CMHC's statement includes some information about options that approved CMHC lenders have to help those who may be impacted, includign deferral of mortgage payments, re-amortization for lower payments, capitalization of interest arrears, special payment arrangements, etc.

Through our proactive Homeowner Assistance Program we are committed to working with our lenders to help our insured homeowners facing setbacks that temporarily impact their ability to meet their mortgage obligations.

ATB Financial

ATB Financial offers support to Fort McMurray customers

ATB encourages all customers affected by the wildfire to call our Customer Care Centre at 1-800-332-8383 to go over their individual situations with our team members, so we can provide the best solutions quickly. Customers affected are also welcome to ask questions in person at any ATB branch outside of Fort McMurray. Efforts are also being made to deploy mobile automated banking machines at evacuation sites and staging centres.

Assistance for customers affected in Fort McMurray

For our customers who are affected by the fires in Fort McMurray and area, please contact our toll-free number at 1-866-557-5509 and a representative will be able to advise you of available assistance options.

Merix / Lendwise

Effective immediately, MERIX Financial's assistance program offers an option of deferring the borrower's mortgage payment. The borrower will need to call us to speak to a Mortgage Specialist, and we will work with them to provide a range of customized mortgage solutions for each individual's personal circumstance. Our Customer Service Contact Centre has setup a dedicated team to receive calls and emails from affected homeowners. They will be working extended hours to provide an added layer of support. We are available Monday - Friday 6am - 6pm MDT, Saturdays 8am - 4pm MDT, and Sundays 10am - 4pm MDT

On behalf of our mortgage broker community, Mortgage Professionals Canada and the Alberta Mortgage Brokers Association have made a $10,000 donation to the Canadian Red Cross in support of the Fort McMurray wildfire relief effort.

Support measures for clients of National Bank

Since the evacuation began, National Bank teams have been working hard to identify local clients and inter-provincial workers, in all business segments, who have been directly affected by the disaster. These

efforts are going well. Over the next few hours, the Bank's main business units will implement a coordinated strategy to proactively contact the clients identified via email, cell phone or any other method at their disposal in order to reassure them and address their specific needs. The measures offered include, among other things:

  • Deferred payments on personal loans
  • Deferred payments of principal and interest on personal mortgage loans
  • Personalized, case-by-case agreements for affected business clients

Affected clients who cannot be reached are invited to contact their branch to discuss their case.

Street Capital

Street Capital Financial Corporation joins Canadians across the Country in expressing our concern for the people of Fort McMurray and the surrounding area that are dealing with unprecedented forest fires.

Property owners that have been affected by these fires may experience financial hardship as a result of temporary evacuation or from the need to rebuild or repair their homes. As a result, Street Capital encourages homeowners to contact our Customer Service team at the first sign of difficulty to discuss their individual situation.

For those impacted, Street Capital will look at the following options to help customers through this difficult time:

  • Deferral of payment
  • Re-amortization of the loan to result in lower payments
